Niklas' speech development
Yesterday, Niklas said the stranges word, and we couldn't quite figure it out at first. His eyes were fixed on something on the table while over and over again uttering the word: "Brrriiim". The "Brr" sounded like a car-engine and then "iiim". Then, after several attempts, we discovered he was trying to say "Prim", which is Norwegian melted brown cheese used as spread. Actually, I don't really fancy the taste myself, but apprearantly he has eaten that kind of cheese in the kindy and picked up the word. Click and see a short video of the moment.
At 18-20 months, our toddler can say a few nouns, names of special people, and a few action words. The infant adds gestures to his speech, and is able to follow a two-step command ("Go to the bedroom and get the toy.") Liltterature and our own experience confirm that there is great variation in the onset of expressive language. Children generally understand far more (this is their "receptive speech") than they are able to articulate themselves ("expressive language").
