Polar Night Coming to an End

Posted by Rune Stavdal

The Polar Night lasts, in Tromsø, from November 21 to January 21. For two months the sun never rises above the horizon! During this dark period, it's pitch dark except during twilight lasting only two-three hours mid-day. The return of the sun on January 21 is celebrated in all schools and kinergartens usually with general assembly, singing and sweet sun-rolls. Here are a few pics taken yesterday from our balcony only four days before the return of the sun.

Hei Rune, Anu and the whole gang!
You have really nice photos here. My favourites are the 2004 and 2007 Christmas shots. The boys are so cute! The other photos are good, too.

Intresting to see this polar night phenomenon in photos! I was waiting to see what happens on Jan the 21st!? How does it change the light situation. Or maybe it's the same as what we have here in Helsinki: darkness and half light...

Forresten hva er det som Winnie sier her? Kunne ikke förstå. : )

Anyways. Greetings from Finland, from Tiina and me. Hope you're having a good Sabbath, and keep on taking those wonderful photos!

Thanks for your comment, Minna and give Tiina a big HI from us! I'll post some scenery shots where the sun just peeps over the horizon. No wonder you couldn't understand what my sister wrote in the post, because she's writing in the accent people speak in Arendal, South Norway. As you may remember from your stay in Norway, the dialects are generally mutually intelligible, but differ significantly with regards to accent, grammar, syntax, and vocabulary. If not accustomed to a particular dialect, even a native Norwegian speaker may have difficulty understanding some dialects.

    Great hearing from you!
